Activities in China: IKEA was founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad in Sweden. After more than half a century’s development, the IKEA Group has become the largest home furnishing company in the world; operation includes retail, purchasing, production, distribution and transportation etc. As of end of August 2015, there are 328 IKEA stores solely owned and managed by the IKEA Group with 155,000 co-workers in 28 countries and territories. Sales for the IKEA Group totaled 31.9 billion Euros for the financial year 2015. IKEA of Sweden (IoS) in Almhult, Sweden, develops the IKEA range. This is the same for IKEA stores all over the world and consists of around 9,500 articles. IKEA Industry is the IKEA industrial group. It produces wood-based furniture and wooden components in 43 industrial units in 11 countries. As of August 2015 the IKEA Group had operations in more than 43 countries – 27 Trading Service Offices in 23 countries and 33 Distribution Centres and 15 Customer Distribution Centres in 17 countries. Co-workers in each office monitor production. This enables them to test new ideas, negotiate prices and check quality while monitoring social and working conditions among suppliers. IKEA keeps a long-term and close cooperation with its suppliers – more than 978 in 50 countries. IKEA forms long-term partnerships with suppliers: on average 11 years. From 1998 till today, IKEA opened 18 stores in China. IKEA’s business idea is to offer a wide range of well-designed, functional home furnishing products at prices so low that as many people as possible will be able to afford them.
