Tiangong Kaiwu – dance drama performance
How do we truly understand a culture beyond facts, meetings, and presentations?
Working between Sweden and China has shown us that culture is best understood not only through reading or discussion, but through lived expression. History and values become clearest when they are experienced rather than explained. This is where cultural performances play an important role. They translate abstract ideas such as perseverance, respect for knowledge, and responsibility across generations into something tangible.
In Shanghai, we were invited by renowned director Lu Chuan to experience the dance drama Tiangong Kaiwu. Inspired by the life of scholar Song Yingxing, the performance offers a cultural interpretation of resilience and long-term contribution, themes deeply rooted in Chinese history and still influential today.
What stayed with us was not the performance itself, but the clarity it brought to these values. In the context of growing Sweden–China interaction, understanding how culture shapes mindset and behaviour is essential.
Many thanks to Lu Chuan and his team for the invitation and warm hospitality. Wishing Tiangong Kaiwu continued success in 2026 and beyond 🎭
