Sourcing Markets Overview

In 2022, global supply chains have continued to face the many disruptions that the past years have brought. The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic are still influencing the global market. Prices and cost of raw materials have continued to surge, further fueled by the Russia-Ukraine war. What companies are concerned most are the increasing cost, including freight, labor, operation, raw materials, and logistics delay and disruption, as well as the long lead time from suppliers.
With China holding on to its zero-covid strategy and with the still lingering supply chain disruptions of the past two years, companies’ perception of China as their major sourcing market has changed, and other geographically strategic locations are being investigated. According to our survey, 78% of the respondents have sourcing activities in Europe. 41% of them spend between 10% – 49% of their global purchasing value in Europe, mainly in Germany. 45% of them source in Southeast Asia, spending only 9% of their global purchasing value in the region. However, respondents still consider China as the most important and attractive sourcing market. 87% of the companies are sourcing in China.

Addressing climate change and environmental issues is becoming an increasingly important factor for companies to include in their business strategies, with pressure coming not only from the political environment but also from stakeholders. The survey shows 40% of the respondents collect the carbon footprint data of new Chinese suppliers when evaluating them, it is a notable increase compared to 29% in 2021. Meanwhile, 35% of the respondents collect the carbon footprint data of Southeast Asian suppliers; 57% respondents collect the carbon footprint data of European suppliers.

Reshoring Trends

Around half of the respondents stated that it’s likely for them to relocate their sourcing out of China; 15% of the respondents stated that they already had definitive or realised plans to move within the past 12 months. For new sourcing destinations, Europe, Southeast Asia and other regions in China are all considered.
                                                                                 Reasons to relocate

Cost saving remains the top reason. Alternative markets can provide lower cost production and countries closer to home can benefit companies by saving on transport-related costs. 46% respondents consider Improve logistics as the second most important reason. Near-shoring is rising as a strategy to regain control and avoid unstable deliveries. Meanwhile, 41% of respondents stated Risk mitigation/reduction such as Covid-related turbulence as one of their top reasons to find new sourcing markets.
Reasons for staying in China and Southeast Asia
Companies keep sourcing in China as China has a very mature supply chain ecosystem, cost-efficient production and experienced manufacturers. Alternative markets are often unable to compete with China’s manufacturing strengths and benefits. Cost savings and production capacity top the list of reasons why companies choose to stay in or start to source in Southeast Asia, and access to new suppliers stands as the top third reason.

 Future Sourcing
China is expected to become somewhat less important in the future of sourcing. The majority of the surveyed companies believe that both Southeast Asia and Europe will rise in importance. Most of them plan on diversifying their supplier base to another country as a risk mitigation strategy. At the same time, enhancing communication with current suppliers helps ensure that orders are fulfilled and reduce risks.

  • China is still highly regarded as the most important sourcing market globally, but its perceived importance is declining.
  • There is a discrepancy between companies’ stated preferred sourcing destination and their actual sourcing decisions.
  • Risk mitigation, cost saving, and logistics issues are the top reasons to relocate sourcing activity.
  • Quality risks, insufficient market knowledge and supplier’s capabilities and experience are the main barriers companies face when entering new sourcing markets.
  • The survey shows a large shift in companies starting to prefer Europe as a sourcing region over Asia Pacific countries.
  • Companies do consider moving sourcing activity out of China. The rate of which that will happen will highly depend on alternative markets’ ability to match China’s sourcing market benefits and vary by sectors.
  • 中国依旧是全球最重要的采购市场,但其重要性正在下降;
  • 企业的意向采购基地与他们实际采购基地存在差异;
  • 降低风险,成本节约和物流问题是企业选择转移采购的主要原因;
  • 产品质量,当地市场行情知识欠缺和供应商质量是企业进入新市场面临的主要问题;
  • 与亚太地区相比,企业开始更倾向将欧洲作为采购基地;
  • 部分企业确实考虑将采购基地移出中国,但这很大程度上取决于替代市场是否具有与中国市场利益相匹配的能力,这也因行业而异。
