Dear all,

I am very happy and honored to reach out to you with this introduction letter, as the newly appointed General Manager of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in China.

I have a humble attitude to this role and the great responsibility that imposes as we represent about 260 Sweden related member companies in China. The member value will always remain the main focus for us as a chamber, and thanks to our offices in Beijing and Shanghai, with expansion plans on a third presence in Guangdong province, we believe to have the necessary infrastructure to serve our members.

SwedCham China’s mission is to promote the conditions for its members to operate in China through networking, events, seminars, and courses of different kind. It has a very important role when it comes to facilitate for its members to obtain information, knowhow and ‘best practices’. We should help to enhance good business climate conditions for our members. Together with our counterparts at Team Sweden China, we are a strong partner on the Chinese market. We have many interesting and important events together also as Team Sweden that helps our members to get the necessary market intelligence.

I hope you will enjoy reading this newsletter and learn about some of the activities that have been undertaken lately by Swedish Embassy, Visit Sweden, Business Sweden, and Swedcham, and I also hope to get the opportunity to meet you at one of our events in the near future.

Embassy: Two Swedish Parliamentary committees visits China


Representatives of the Parliamentary Committee on Finance and the Committee on Industry and Trade visited Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The trip was to broaden the knowledge on China in areas such as economic growth, finance, monetary policy, digitalization and AI. Fruitful meetings were held in Beijing with the National People’s Congress, National Energy Agency, AIIB, World Bank, ABB, Ericsson, SEB, Business Sweden, Swedish Chamber of Commerce, EU SME centre, research institutes and think tanks.

Consulate General of Shanghai: Alfa Laval Opened New Factory



In July, the Swedish Company Alfa Laval opened a new factory in the city of Kunshan in Jiangsu. The opening ceremony, which took place on 10 July, gathered over 100 participants. The Consul General in Shanghai, Lisette Lindahl, delivered opening remarks. Alfa Laval has been present in China for over 30 years. The new plant will create hundreds of new jobs in Kunshan.

Consulate General of Shanghai: Pop-up Store in Hangzhou Displayed Swedish lifestyle



From July 8 to July 18, a pop-up store was launched by the Consulate General of Sweden in Shanghai. Consul General Lisette Lindahl inaugurated the store. The theme of the pop-up store was Swedish lifestyle and gathered over 30 Swedish brands which exhibited their products, from foodstuff to furniture, at Qin Chen Li shopping center in Hangzhou. The ten-day event allowed visitors to explore different Swedish products before placing an order online. Most of the products on display are available on Tmall and Taobao.

Embassy: Roundtable Meeting on Supply Chain CSR Management



Traceability of supply chains to increase transparency has become a goal of many Swedish companies’ sustainability work in China, despite many challenges foreseen. Meanwhile, more collaboration among brands is a common expectation to strengthen influence along supply chains. These messages were part of the major take-aways from a fruitful roundtable discussion among Swedish companies in Shanghai. The roundtable was co-organized by Business Sweden and the CSR Centre of the Embassy. The outcome will serve as input to update a CSR toolkit for Sino-Swedish supply chains, which aims to facilitate for the Swedish SMEs in China.

Team Sweden China: Life Sciences and Health Study Tour to Guangdong Province



The Embassy, the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in China and Business Sweden had a joint study visit to Guangdong Province to better comprehend the reality of trade in life sciences and health care. The trip was combined with a Health Roadshow in Shenzhen where the Embassy and Business Sweden facilitated meetings for Astra Zeneca, HemoCue, Getinge, Elekta, Mölnlycke and Bactiguard with local authorities, Hong Kong University Shenzhen Hospital and Luohuo hospital group. The official delegation met with BGI Genomics, European Chamber of Commerce, Tencent, Huawei, We Doctor, Bellman& Symfon and Southern Medicine Economic Institute.

Embassy: CEO Breakfast on Greater Bay Area



A CEO breakfast was held in early September hosted by Ambassador Helena Sångeland. The theme was the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the business opportunities and challenges for Swedish companies. The guests have listened to inspiring presentations given by Business Sweden Hongkong Office and the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China.

Opportunities within automotive, ICT and life sciences are identified for Swedish companies. To visit for first-hand experience, assess growth opportunities and explore R&D potential in the area are recommended. Concerns for the rising talent cost in the area were raised during the meeting.

Team Sweden China: Swedish District Energy Roadshow in Yantai and Beijing



Swedish Energy Agency, SweHeat & Cooling, the Embassy of Sweden in Beijing and Business Sweden, partnering with local authorities arranged two District Energy Roadshows to Yantai city, Shandong province and Beijing on September 18-19, 2019. Energy Counsellor Magnus Carnwall led a Swedish delegation of 10 companies to both. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Yantai Municipal government and China District Heating Association. In total 100 and 130 participants joined the roadshows respectively.

Embassy: Strategic Cooperation Signing Ceremony between SWEP and Enclean



SWEP, a Swedish heat exchange and transfer system supplier and ENCLEAN, a Chinese heating service provider signed a Strategic Cooperation Agreement at the Embassy. The two companies will cooperate on developing heating technical equipment and services towards a greener and more efficient level. The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Swedish Ambassador to China, Helena Sångeland and Energy Counsellor Magnus Carnwall.

Visit Sweden: Joint digital campaign on Nordic tourism



A joint digital campaign on Nordic tourism was launched on one of China’s most popular social platform “Little Red Book” in August aiming at promoting off-season travels. It has attracted over 1.6 million impressions and 1000+ user generated contents. The joint initiative was co-financed by European Travel Commission and the national tourism boards of four Nordic countries.

Visit Sweden: travel trade familiarization tours



Several travel trade familiarization tours arranged by Visit Sweden in partnership with Visit Stockholm, Göteborg&Co, Turism Skåne as well as Visit Värmland. The purpose was to explore more in-depth travel experiences to enhance high-end tailor-made trips as well as individual trips.

Business Sweden: Jinan-Sweden Eco-city Industrial Cooperation Dialogue



September 25th Business Sweden organized participation in Jinan-Sweden Eco-city Industrial Cooperation Dialogue to discuss how Sweden can contribute to sustainable urban development in Jinan, Shandong province. Helena Sångeland, Ambassador of Sweden first met Ren Airong, Deputy Governor of Shandong Province, then participated in the dialogue with Mayor Sun Shutao and 90 participants from the city government. The city presented the vision for Jinan, a plan to build new urban areas for 1.8 million people the coming 16 years, a project the size of an entire Stockholm, a huge opportunity for business with Swedish companies and utilizing Swedish experience.

The China Sweden Hammarby Eco city alliance works with cities all over China to support sustainable development. The alliance consists of four founding members: Business Sweden, White Peak, Envac and SWECO. From September the alliance has five new members; ASSA ABLOY, Hags, Regin, Velux and Östberg. We will now follow-up this dialogue, expand the alliance to more members and continue efforts to assist Chinese cities in their sustainable development.

Business Sweden: Alibaba cloud extend collaboration



Business Sweden and Alibaba Cloud extended their collaboration through the launch of the China Gateway Program together with a number of other international firms and government agencies. Through the program Swedish companies can be supported along their journey to enter and scale up in China by getting access to trends, insights and peer events related to cloud technology.

Collaboration with technology providers in local markets enables Business Sweden to facilitate and accelerate market entry and expansion and to deliver true impact for Swedish companies. For more information about the China Gateway Program just talk to us.

SwedCham China: Traditional Crayfishparties in Beijing and Shanghai



Our traditional crayfish party in Beijing on August 20th and in Shanghai on August 21st gathered altogether over 200 people within the Swedish /Chinese community .

The Beijing Crayfish party was Co-organized by Swedish Chamber of Commerce in China and SWEA International with plenty of Crayfish, snap songs led by Mats Harborn, as well as a charming performance by the A Capella Choir JingSing.

We had also generous prizes at our Lucky Draw provided by @Beijing Royal Grand Hotel, Sarment, SWEA International, @HULU, and @TRB. The after-party was at HULU roof terrace.

In Shanghai It was a great opportunity to network with friends old and new in a relaxed and festive atmosphere with lots of snaps songs and dancing.

Swedcham China: Advanced Sales Management course



As requested by our member companies this autumn we will offer a range of workshops targeting sales management professionals and business owners who must assume a sales management role.
Every sales organization needs a leader who can inspire them, support the organization's vision, and set the direction for the future, therefore our training will enable sales managers to establish a management framework built on productive behavior, cooperation, collaboration, and accountability.

Last Wednesday, we had a great pleasure to invite Feng Lu, Co-Founder of Martinsen International, as a trainer of our whole-day training on Advanced Sales Management at the beautiful Jinshang Li(金尚丽) office. There were a lot of interesting and inspiring discussions among 27 participants from near and far.

This in-depth program covers four critical sales management abilities:
- The role of the sales manager and core values of successful sales (optimistic and self-motivated)
- Sales target setting and the logical relations among strategic-marketing-sales
- How to identify user needs and increase sales efficiency
- Construction, Incentive, and Development of Sales Team

The training program was diverse and fun and it ended up with a big success. All the participants had increased the abilities of:
- Effectively use spoken and body language in order to increase influence and confidence
- Manage own customers and provide management decisions for the organization
- Forecasting and resource allocation
- Task follow-up and coaching

New Head of CSR Centre of the Embassy


Minister Counsellor Anders Wollter started at the CSR Centre mid-September. He is a Swedish career diplomat with experience from several postings at HQ, as well as abroad – Kosovo, Brazil, France, Belgium, Germany, Kenya – and China.

His specialties include economic diplomacy, European Union affairs and trade promotion. During recent years, he worked a lot in the interface between business, development and sustainability.
